double page spread

This is a double page spread of a music magazine. Although my double page spread will contain more then one image it will contain around the same amount of words. I will use quotes from the 'artists' as a headline like this magazine has done. This magazine has delibrately made the title unique and to stand out. I will also use this technique. The image on this double page spread is dramatic and stands out, the image also suits with the contents of the text and the font of the headline. The use of colour on the by line makes the text stand out and informs the reader who the article is about. The font of the headline gives off a unorganized vibe and gives off a clue about what personality the cover star has. Whilst the actual peice about the cover star is rather small it contrasts with the largeness of the image and the headline. Because of this the image and headline actually inform the reader before the text does.

contents page of a music magazine

This is not a usual contents page. The layout is not like a typical contents page but it does the job of one. It has the page numbers and headings along the sides which inform the reader which page to turn to and what it contains. Whilst colourful and vibrant the images on the page actually take up most of the space. Contents is written in two different fonts and the contents list is rather small. Although the font is small it still stands out to the reader as the rest of the page is colourful and the black contrasts with the pastel colours. What is drawn on the contents page gives us an idea to what the genre and target audience is of this magazine. In my opinion this looks like a kind of 'hippie-ish' magazine. The characters in the drawings are smoking and everything seemed relaxed and floaty. The word chicks is also used giving it a non 21st century feeling.

This is another music magazine contents page thats totally different from the first one. The magazine name is shown in this contents pages in the colour red which is bright and draws attention. In this contents page everything is layed out in structure the magazine only uses a selection of colours making the page seem simple yet well presented. The contents page lists each page number and thing featured on it.

music magazine

This is a music magazine front cover. A music magazine has all the same conventions of a normal magazine.

Masthead

Title

Picture

Sub-headings

Date

Issue

This particular magazine has alot going on. The main picture and background are quite attention drawing and stand out more then the rest of the front cover. In this magazine the picture fits in with the genre, also the fonts and backgrounds fit in with the type of band which appear on the front cover. The use of screamers attract attention to the reader and the content of them may convince the reader to buy the magazine. The drawings contrasted with photographic images give the magazine a eccentric feel and because of this it defines the audience of the magazine. Artisits names are highlighted on the cover to draw attention to who features in the magazine. This is done as some people may only buy the magazine as their favourite artist is featured in it.

This is another example of a music magazine. Just by the image of the featured atrists on the cover we can tell what type of genre this magazine is. The men are all dressed in black giving of a gothic image. The male in the middle is obviously the main person in this band as he is centred in the middle. Also by holding a prop it draws more attention to him. This magazine is not colourful however it is far from basic. The masthead is covered by the image however it still stands out as the letters are 'smashed'. This magazine is aimed at the rock genre generation. To show the band in all black, looking a threat and looking individual applys to the target audience.
The colours used in the magazine are kept simplel. Black, white, yellow and red are used and because it isnt 'fancy' it also proves what genre it is. The words 'Avenged Sevenfold' are written in block capital letters and are contrasted with the black and yellow surrounding it. This tells the audience who the band are and the caption underneath ('the worlds most dangerous band') makes the audience want to find out why.

college magazine

For our first project we are creating and making a college magazine front cover and contents page.
This cover has a specific target audience, not only is it for students but also for teachers/lectures's. This magazine looks asthough its for an older audience, such as university students. Although this is quite simple in its style it appeals to all ages and audiences that its meant too.

A contents page tells you whats going to be in the magazine.

This particular contents page has a good layout and is easy to read. It looks classy and the layout, font and picture all relate to one another.

comparing magazines

The magazines i've chosen to compare are Vogue and Tv Guide.
These two magazines are completly different in layout and in content.

Vogue magazine is a magazine aimed at women. Its upmarket, trendy and sophisicated. By looking at the front cover of the magazine you can tell immediatly who the target audience is. The writings in pale colours, it has a woman on the front and its all about womens fashion.

The woman in the picture is eye catching, she looks like the 'perfect woman'. This is done delibratly by the editors of the magazine to make more sales. Many women will buy this magazine hoping to pick up hints and tips to look like the many beautiful women who feature on the cover. This is the editors aim.

The writing on the magazine is simple and easy to read. Some words are written in bold to make sure that it stands out and appeals to the target audience. The magazine has many conventions; title, picture, heading, sub-headings, price, date and information on whats in the magazine.

Tv guide is a magazine that lets people know whats on the Tv and when. It also gives information about the programmes shown.

Like Vogue, this magazine also has many conventions, yet its entirely different. Whilst Vogue has a more girly and glamorous look about it Tv guide doesnt. This is all to do with the target audience. The target audience for this magazine is unisex. It uses colours such as red, white, black and blue which fit in to appeal to its audience.

The magazines layout is made to suit with the picture that appears on the front. This issue has a pciture of Lost. Lost is a drama but also has a hint of thriller in it. The magazine has used dark and dull colours delibratly to fit in with the cover picture. There are also other pictures on the magazine down the left hand corner, these pictures are smaller but still do the same thing, to let you know whats featured in the magazine. Underneath the title there are unanswered questions, this is done to make the audience intrigued to know whats going to happen.

Conventions of a contents page

A contents page has alot of features to tell you whats in the magazine. It has page numbers along the side in a list, the reason for this is that you will know whats on what page. Like the front cover, the contents page also has pictures to show you whats invloved in the magazine. The colours are quite bright and easy to distinguish making it easier to read.

Conventions of a college magazine

A college magazine has a title, this is so people know what the magazine is called and have an idea of what genre it is. It has a picture in the middle to grab peoples attention. It also has sub-headings to inform you what else the magazine contains. The date will also be shown on the magazine so people can keep up to date with it. I think the target audience for the magazine is for teachers, i think this because of the layout of the magazine and its title 'Secondary teachers'.
